How to Prep Your Family for Christmas Photos

Family photos season is here and I know what you’re thinking: “How do I get everyone on board without losing my holiday spirit?” And honestly, as a tired AF single mom – FAIR QUESTION!

The good news is, family Christmas sessions with me are short, sweet, and full of genuine smiles. My approach is all about connection and keeping everyone engaged, no stiff poses or perfect hair placement. You’ll be surprised at how quickly we’re done, long before anyone can even say “cheese!”

Here’s how to make your family photo experience fun, easy, and memorable.

Set the Tone

Let your family know that this session won’t take hours. It’s a quick, upbeat experience meant to capture your real connection, not a modeling gig. When everyone understands that it’ll be fast and fun, they show up relaxed and ready to enjoy themselves.

Choose Outfits That Feel Like You

Your wardrobe should reflect who you are as a family.
If you love dressing up, go for it! But if plaid shirts, jeans, or cozy sweaters are more your speed, that’s perfect too. The key is to coordinate, not match. Pick a color palette (warm tones, cool tones, neutrals) and mix textures or patterns that complement each other.

Think cohesive, not identical.

Remind Everyone Why This Matters

Family photos are more than just pictures, they’re memories that you’ll treasure for years to come.
Remind your family that this is something important to you, something that fills your cup. You spend so much of your energy taking care of everyone else; this is one moment that’s just for you (and you deserve it!). And it’s NOT selfish to ask for what you want – it’s just another lie we’ve been fed as women. Just like you teach your family to speak up and advocate for themselves you get to ask for what you want judgement free.

Rest, Hydrate, Repeat

A little self-care goes a long way!
Get plenty of sleep the night before, and drink water throughout the day. No amount of makeup or wardrobe magic can hide tired eyes and your energy truly shows in the photos.

Embrace the Imperfections

Not everyone will cooperate perfectly and that’s okay! Toddlers might squirm, teenagers might refuse to smile, and that’s all part of your story. This season of life might feel a little chaotic, but it’s worth documenting.

One day, you’ll look back and laugh. I still remember the photos where I refused to smile, my parents framed them, and they’ve become family legends that still make us laugh at every holiday dinner.

Make It a Family Experience

Turn your photo session into a memory of its own. Set expectations early: we’re doing this together, we’re going to have fun, and then we’re getting hot cocoa afterward. Having a treat or tradition to look forward to makes a world of difference.

Capturing your family during the holidays doesn’t have to be stressful – it can actually be joyful. With a little prep, an open heart, and the right mindset, you’ll walk away with photos that truly reflect the warmth and love of your family this Christmas season.
