Personal Branding and why it’s important
Nicki reached out to me at the suggestion of Dawn Jensen Beaudoin, a fellow real estate agent in Vancouver WA, whom I photographed a few years ago. In fact, Dawn’s headshot can be seen on shopping carts in multiple local grocery stores. (to the endless delight of my daughter) It’s always such an honor to get referral clients – it doesn’t get better than that for a small business owner.
Getting into specifics
Nicki and I got on a phone call as soon as she texted me and we discussed what she needed for her personal branding headshots. Because the time of the year, we decided to shoot at a studio in Portland with natural light and save ourselves headaches trying to manage an unexpected rainy day. She also felt super comfortable doing her own hair and makeup, so we didn’t need to hire hair and makeup services! That made our shoot super easy.

Time to get creative
We planned on shooting 3-4 simple outfits, so that her images were varied and capable of being used for at least a full year! Nicki is a real estate agent and she recently reached out and sent me some of the promos for her business with the updated headshots and OH MAN it was so fun to see how she put the images to good work.

More than just a face
I cannot tell you how important it is to get updated headshots and document what you’re into. Who you are, your hobbies and interests, your personality, how you make others feel – those all come across in a beautiful portrait. And they show your audience why they should work with you!

Why Updated Headshots Are Essential for Real Estate Agents
In real estate, you are the brand. Before a potential client ever meets you in person, they’ve likely already formed an impression based on your online presence: your website, social media, listings, marketing materials and more. One of the most powerful (and often overlooked) elements of that presence is your headshot.

First Impressions Happen Online and they happen fast
Studies show that people form an opinion about someone in a fraction of a second. In real estate, that moment often happens when a client sees your profile photo on: Zillow, Realtor.com, or MLS listings, your website or landing pages, social media profiles and email signatures and digital ads. If your headshot looks outdated, low-quality, or inconsistent with your current brand, it can create hesitation, even if you’re an exceptional agent. A modern, professional photo immediately communicates confidence, approachability, and professionalism.

Trust Is Everything in Real Estate
Buying or selling a home is one of the biggest financial decisions most people will ever make. Clients want to work with someone they trust. A current headshot helps build that trust by: showing authenticity and transparency, making you feel more relatable, creating consistency between online and in-person interactions. When clients recognize you instantly from your photos, it reinforces credibility and comfort, which are key ingredients in forming strong client relationships.

Your Brand Evolves—Your Headshot Should Too
As your career grows, so does your brand. And your headshot represents your professionalism, your brand, and your promise to your clients. Make sure that you’re investing in a high-quality, current image as a way to strengthen your brand, stand out from competitors, and make a powerful first impression that lasts.
